Is anyone else having very slow charging problems with the C40? Our car usually charges around 50-60KWH at every fast charger we've been to no matter what level the battery is. The dealership states that they've checked the electronics and that there's nothing wrong with anything. They charged one of their C40 floor models from 20-90% and it took 2.5 hours to charge at their fast charger! My car will take at least an hour to an 1.5 hours to charge from 20-80%. We purchased this car in September so we've charged in hot, warm, cool, cold weather and it's still slow no matter what the outside temp is. We've never even approached the 150KWH that's predicted. Since their floor model took 2.5 hours they've stated that there's nothing that can be done for our car and that's the way the car is. Now I have a pricey car that can't really go on a trip unless I devote hours of charging time into the trip. I'm sending a letter to corporate about this complaint to see if they have an answer. I don't know how they can sell EV cars that will need hours of charging at fast chargers.

Just got my C40 two weeks ago. It does seem to charge very slowly over 60%. I mostly charge at work on a public charger that I think maxes out around 16kw. In fact, I've yet to be able to charge it to 80 or 90%. Still waiting on my electrician to install my home unit.

Yes, it's been to the dealers twice and they say that their diagnostics show that nothing is wrong, They took one of their floor models and charged it from 20%-90% and it took them 2.5 hours to charge at their level 3 charger. That's extraordinarily long to have a car at a charger. This makes it impossible to travel out of town to any destination planned.
No, corporate never responded and the Customer support said to bring it back to the dealer for another look. So, that's no help since the dealer's service keeps saying there's nothing wrong both times I've brought it there. This slow charging is certainly not even close to what the manual state should be happening. Actually, the manual states that if the charging is slow that the car should be looked at for service. Good luck with your car. Hope you have better luck. We're thinking of going back to a gas car. We'll lose money turning this in, but we can't travel with this car without spending an inordinate amount of time sitting at a charging station every few hours. That's not conducive to traveling with this car. We're very disappointed in Volvo, and we've been a Volvo family for years.

Welcome to the forum guys!

@nursepride is this happening at home as well as at fast chargers? @RPKVA Has it happened since you picked up your C40?

I don't have a home charger so I usually use the fast charger at Electrify America, although I charged at the dealership's fast charger once and that didn't get over 50 KWH and took 1 hour 45 minutes to charge from 20%-90%. The Electrify America has a 150 KWH fast charger. I've gone to different cities and towns to charge as well as to another state and it's always the same-slow, slow, slow at the fast chargers. Annoying and frustrating. And yes, this has been the case since we got the car 5 months ago. So, it's charged in hot, warm, cold and cool weather temperatures.

@EVolvo @ChargedUp - success today. In about 5 hours I managed to charge from 44% to 90% on a level 2 free public charger. There are virtually no level 3 chargers anywhere near me, so I haven't been able to test the 10-80% in 40 minutes claim. I'm hoping this is possible otherwise I guess we won't be taking it to see family which are both over 2 hours away.

hey guys! have a 2022 C40, exclusively charge it on public chargers and such till i can get my plug installed in my parking space

I use EA mostly to charge up once a week, when I arrive with 10-20%, i get 141KW till about 50%, then derates to 100kw till 60 and then down to 80kw till 70%; and then you get 60kw till about 80%; after that, it drops down to 40-20kw, the closer you get to 100%.

I used to have an etron and loved that it was 140-150kw till 80%; wish Volvo could update our cars to give us a little more speed till 80%. I get they are worried about long term battery health but waiting 60 minutes to charge (on a good day) is no fun either. I am seriously thinking of getting rid of the c40 just for this reason, but have held off for now. I really love the little darn car

That's fantastic jv91!!! I wish I could get those KWH numbers. I only average around 60KWH even when down to 10% battery. I brought it to a different dealer's service center today and they told me that the "car is operating as designed!" And that there's nothing to fix. They charged my car from 39%-90% and it took 90 minutes! That's not what Volvo advertises, but 2 different service departments tell me I won't get charged in 35 minutes as advertised. I do love my car, but it's non-functional for any type of travel over 100 miles. So, we are seriously going to start looking for another car-back to gas and turn this EV in. The charging times are just too time consuming to be practical.

Did you dealer already check it out and run a diagnostics test?

Yes they did. I've had 2 different dealers do the diagnostics. One did it twice and the other did it once and they both tell me that there's no updates needed and the diagnostics say nothing is wrong. I pretty much get a pat on the back and a good bye. And then I'm stuck with a car needed extraordinary time to charge and never more than 60KWH at a fast charger. And I've tried different chargers in different cities, towns and even went to another state to try their fast charger and it's still slow there as well. I'm a firm believer that something is wrong and the service department can't find it. Either that or Volvo is false advertising when they say the C40 will charge from 10%-80% in 35 minutes.

very sorry to hear; i went last summer on a roadtrip to Tampa florida, about 650 miles round trip; luckily the EA stations were all working perfectly and I was getting those quicker speeds, so I only added about 40 minutes to an average gas powered trip. makes a big difference when you can get from 20% to 70% in 25 minutes or so. Definitely take it to another dealer, maybe they cannot or are unwilling to even diagnose the problem. good luck!

Congrats on getting your C40 @jv91! Welcome to the forum! Yeah an update to improve charging would be greatly appreciated. How do you find the C40 compares to the e-tron?

thanks!

have had it since april 2022, just hit 6100 miles the other day. Compared to the etron, i prefer the simplicity of the interior and the functionality in the design (shop bag hooks in the trunk and glove box, etc) but like i said, i miss the quick charging.

DON'T miss the electrical gremlins that seem to come with every VAG product I've ever bought, the soft close doors failed many times, one time trapping me in the vehicle. It was a luxurious ride, but hell to live with. Plus, barely got 140-160 miles on a charge; C40 blows this out of the water by comparison. Ever since I got that OTA update that tweaked our range, i am consistently getting 200-210 miles on a charge. Made the c40 actually doable on a road trip!

Hi, I'm in the UK and he my C40 since October 22, mostly on public chargers frequently tried the 150kwh + chargers to minimise my wait time and get on with my journey.currently at 18000 miles and never achieved more than 60kwh at any of these chargers...in for service soon and I'll see what they say then but you are not alone with this issue !!

Hi and further to my previous I watched a couple of you tube videos and noticed the centre console charging screen showed a current limit of 48 Amps, I've checked my vehicle and it maxes out at 32 Amps which would obviously impact the maximum charging rate..does this suggest it's more a software issue rather than the BMS ?
